Description

Designed for the beginner and intermediate rehabilitation therapist, this course provides learners with the knowledge base, skills and strategies necessary to achieve therapeutic success with a dementia patient.

The lecture delineates the stages of dementia and the functional abilities associated with each stage, giving the learner a good understanding of how different patients with dementia may (or may not) be able to retain information. It also covers such treatment essentials as screening and evaluations, how to set goals and write a treatment plan, and the best methods for planning for interventions and discharge.

Purpose:

Learners will gain an understanding of the major impact that dementia has upon the therapeutic process.

Learners will become familiar with the fact that the individual with dementia can greatly benefit from a tailored, individualized treatment plan when developed from a patient's residual/capable abilities.

Goals & Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe and classify the dementia process and effects on physical function and communication.
  2. Identify the specific stage of dementia and associated capabilities, limitations and behaviors.
  3. Screen, evaluate, set functional/attainable/measurable goals, and develop a treatment plan.
  4. Document and demonstrate skilled interventions.
  5. Formulate a functional maintenance program.
