Description

Physical therapists and physical therapist assistants are required to make ethical decisions every day while treating patients. This course is designed to provide guidance for licensed physical therapists and physical therapist assistants in ethical decision making, and to provide resources to help guide them in their decision-making process.

Participants will apply ethical standards and theories by considering how challenges present themselves in the realm of everyday physical therapy practice in a variety of settings. Nuances to ethics in healthcare as compared to other business settings will also be discussed while the course describes different methods on how to handle ethical cases. Participants will then apply those principles presented to a variety of case scenarios.

Goals & Objectives:

At the completion of this lecture, the learner will be able to:

  1. Identify the three stages of professional maturity in judgment and moral agency.
  2. Discuss ethical situations in different practice settings with diverse patient and employee populations.
  3. Interpret ethical concepts, principles and standards.
  4. Theorize how such ethical concepts, principles and standards would apply to four ethical cases.
  5. Explain how to recognize an ethical situation.
  6. Utilize the APTA Code of Ethics for PTs and the Standards of Ethical Conduct for the PTA in resolving ethical decisions.
  7. Given a theoretical patient description, determine the effect of unethical practice on the patient.
  8. Articulate the importance of ethical practice on the profession.

She has served the American Physical Therapy Association as a Delegate-at-Large from the State of New Jersey from 2008 to 2010, and the Director of Government Relations for the New Jersey chapter of the APTA from 2011 to 2012. Ms. Sarfaty is also a member of the Board of Visitors for the University of Pittsburgh School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences.
