Physical Therapy Continuing Education Course

Understanding 12 Lead ECG

Lecture Name

Understanding 12 Lead ECG     $29.95

This lecture is part of the following course:
Arrhythmia & ECG Interpretations for Healthcare Professionals

Description

Understanding the electrocardiogram (ECG) requires a basic understanding of the electrophysiology and anatomy of the heart and conduction system, an appreciation of the ECG waveforms and a certain amount of practice in the systematic review of the 12 lead and single lead ECG rhythm strips. By understanding how to read a 12 lead ECG, a clinician should be able to make clinical judgments from review of 12 lead ECGs in charts and identify ischemia, infarction or injury, as well as hypertrophy, and have a better understanding of the patient's cardiac pathology in order to make appropriate clinical decisions.

Continuing education credits

This course is acceptable for credit in most states for PTs and PTAs. To see the full list of courses approved for continuing education in your state, visit our courses page and filter for "Physical Therapist" or "Physical Therapist Assistant" and your state of licensure.

Difficulty: Advanced

Goals & Objectives:

At the completion of this lecture, the learner will be able to:

  1. Identify the limitations and indications for 12 lead ECG.
  2. Identify acute changes on a 12 lead, including ST elevation or depression.
  3. Identify ventricular hypertrophy on a 12 lead ECG.
  4. Identify previous myocardial infarction by identifying significant Q waves.
  5. Discuss the significance of ST elevation on a 12 lead ECG, accompanied by cardiac enzyme elevation.
  6. Discuss the significance of ST depression on a resting 12 lead ECG, accompanied by cardiac enzyme elevation.
  7. Determine the anatomic areas of the myocardium that relate to the specific leads of the 12 lead ECG, and relate to the specific coronary artery that supplies blood to that anatomic area.
