Oncology Section of the APTA: Shana E. Harrington, Sharlynn Tuohy and Frannie Westlake


This course is taught by the following leaders from the Oncology Section of the American Physical Therapy Association.

Shana E. Harrington PT, Ph.D., SCS, MTC

Dr. Harrington is currently a Clinical Associate Professor in the Physical Therapy Program at the University of South Carolina, and she has previously taught at Creighton University, George Mason University and the University of North Florida. She has done research with the NIH and the Mayo Clinic, and has been published in a variety of peer-reviewed journals, most recently as part of her work with the Oncology Section EDGE Task Force. Dr. Harrington's research interests include survivorship and patient-reported outcome measures in cancer survivors, assessment of upper extremity impairments in women diagnosed with breast cancer, and the overhead athlete.

Examples of Dr. Harrington's accomplishments include:

  • Has written a column for Rehabilitation Oncology on the latest research related to oncology rehabilitation since 2013.
  • Has worked with the Federal State Board of Physical Therapy since 2010 as an item writer for a variety of exams, including the undergraduate Practice Exam and Assessment Tool (PEAT) and the graduate National Physical Therapy Exam.
  • Manuscript reviewer for a variety of publications, including Acta Oncologica, Cancer Management and Research, Journal of Cancer Survivorship: Research and Practice and Rehabilitation Oncology.
  • Recipient of several teaching awards, including the Summer Initiative for Teaching Excellence Award at Creighton University.
  • Has volunteered for the International Paralympic Committee as an International Swimming Medical Classifier since 2009, and a Swimming Educator for both the International Triathlon Union and the International Paralympic Committee since 2011.
Sharlynn Tuohy PT, DPT, M.B.A.

Dr. Tuohy is the Senior Director of Acute Rehabilitation at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, NY. She previously worked at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, NY for 13 years, starting as a Senior Physical Therapist and eventually rising to be Director of Rehabilitation Services. Dr. Tuohy is frequently invited to speak to medical professionals about rehabilitation therapy for patients undergoing treatment for cancer.

Examples of Dr. Tuohy's accomplishments include:

  • Nominating & Awards Chair for the Oncology Section of the APTA.
  • Member of the Adjunct Faculty of the Department of Physical Therapy at New York University and a Guest Speaker at the Physical Therapy Program at Hunter College in New York City.
Frannie Westlake PT, DPT, NCS

Dr. Westlake is a physical therapist at Oncology Rehab in the Denver area in Colorado, leading their neurological rehabilitation program. An active member of the Oncology Section of the American Physical Therapy Association, she specializes in chemotherapy–induced peripheral neuropathy, dizziness, and fall prevention.

Examples of Dr. Westlake's accomplishments include:

  • One of only 58 Neurological Clinical Specialists in the state of Colorado.
  • Works at the University of Colorado in the physical therapy program as a lab assistant.
